Editing Services

Every piece of writing can benefit from another "pair of eyes."  Drawing on her
experience as a writer, a writing teacher, and a freelance editor, Mary provides a
variety of editing services for written works.
Substantive Editing - Editing for clarity and structure of the text.  This editing
includes pointing out weaknesses in the storyline and in writing style, making
suggestions for additions to the text, for removing text, and for reorganizing text.
The editor will also make comments about overall appearance and general layout of
the text.  The substantive editing stage usually occurs before the author prepares a
final draft; the author is prepared and willing to make major revisions to the
manuscript if necessary.
Mechanical Editing - Line by line editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation and
other writing mechanics.  The editor will also check for consistency in fonts and
layout of text. The mechanical editing stage usually occurs after the author is
satisfied with the overall content of the manuscript and only wants to make
mechanical corrections.
Proofreading - A final reading of the manuscript to check for stray typing or
formatting errors. The proofreading stage usually occurs just before the author
sends the manuscript for publication.
Fact-checking - Reviewing the manuscript or a portion of the manuscript for
accuracy.  Statements of fact, such as dates, places, events, and names, will be
verified against other known sources.  Fact-checking can occur at any stage of the
writing project
