FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions

1. How much do you charge? Rates vary depending on your project and the type of
work you need. Research, editing, and writing services are usually charged at an
hourly rate. Speaking services are based on a flat-fee plus travel expenses.
Long-term or extensive projects, such as compiling a book, may be charged on a
flat-fee rate, also. Most research projects will incur additional expenses including
travel to repositories, photocopies, ordering microfilms, etc. Mary makes every effort
to keep expenses to a minimum, using the most economical means to gather data.
2. What is the process for engaging your services? After discussing the services
you need, you will receive a written agreement spelling out the terms of the
agreement. Both you and Mary will sign the agreement. For research projects, you
need to provide details of all previous research in order to prevent duplicate efforts.
All projects require a partial down payment.
3. What will I receive from you after the research is completed? All clients
receive a fully documented, written report along with any relevant photocopies of
research findings.
4. Do you offer any guarantees for genealogical and historical research?
Research findings are unpredictable. It's a rare occasion when no documents can be
found for an ancestor, but it does happen. The records needed to answer your
research questions may or may not exist. Even if the research problem isn't solved,
you still receive a report detailing which records were consulted. Sometimes a
negative result can be equally revealing.
5. I live in California; my ancestors lived in Massachusetts and Indiana; you
live in New Mexico. How can you conduct research for me? It's common for
records related to your ancestor to be in a variety of locations, even places your
ancestor never lived. Mary is an expert at finding records that are in faraway places.
She knows techniques for acquiring the information needed no matter where it is.
6. Will you do a simple document "look-up?" Yes. No project is too small. If
you need a New Mexico record, such as a death certificate, a marriage license, an
obituary, or a photograph of a tombstone, Mary will be glad to secure copies of those
records for you.
